The international community is currently facing a pandemic of acute respiratory syndrome caused by a new coronavirus, SARS-CoV2. This syndrome has been named COVID-19 for Corona Virus Disease 2019 by the World Health Organization.
The diagnostic method is the genomic detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus by a molecular biology method (Reverse Transcription- Polymerase Chain Reaction or RT-PCR) in respiratory samples, preferably on a nasopharyngeal swab.
From the beginning of the epidemic in Europe, a great shortage in collection devices, ie ideally nasopharyngeal swabs, was observed in Belgium but also in many European countries.
In order to find some alternatives, we have been collaborating with the University of Liege, more specifically with Pr Pierrette Melin, ‘Cheffe du service de Microbiologie Clinique’ and ‘Directrice du Centre national de référence des Streptococcus agalactiae’, for the development of alternative prototypes to current swabs. These new swabs, using a different design, present similar properties.
